Internet Experiments

This weeks adventure was trying out 5g home internet. I had tried this a while ago and while the speeds were comparable to better than my wired internet it just didn't work well with work vpn. Which happily seems to not be the case.

As it always does this surfaced a few interesting problems to solve.

CGNAT - I have put together a homeserver to hold my files as a NAS as well as serving music to me on the go and for sharing videos and the way I had it set up with wired internet I set up dynamic dns to point to a domain I owned and pointed both to the server and that was quite functional. Well CGNAT means you can actually get those all the way to your devices. The solution I've picked as best was Tailscale to set up a small VPN for my network. I initially was trying Zerotier but I found it a bit more finicky to get things to connect.

Power Levels - I think eventually I will want to get an outdoor antenna to improve signal quality with 300+ Downlink and 20+ uplink when plugged directly into the modem its no that vital to spend money on yet. But since getting more uplink was the main reason for going this path I will want to pursue it.

IOT - Luckily it proved easy to set up a 2 ghz only network for the couple of smart devices I have that tend to freak out at mixed networks, either wpa2/3 or 2ghz/5ghz. This was another great improvement from previous experiences.
